A little less than a month ago, I bought a domain to try to get an IRC network community together. Last week or the week before, I opened the network. I call it, The Geek Place. It is still quite small, but there is always room for expansion, which takes time. We only have 2 staff members, myself and Dom, and only 1 server linked to us. They are all running great and we do have a few users on there that we know from other IRC networks, which is great. We have a Twitter and a Website that we regularly update with new policies and network news. If you would like to take a gander at The Geek Place, head over to the website for more information.

For a few days now, I have been using something on my server to connect to IRC from called Ezbounce. This is basically some software for a *nix server where it acts sort of like a IRC server. You connect to it and log in and then you can connect to any IRC network of your choice from the server. Whenever you disconnect from that server, you still stay on, but it changes your nick to something else and you can always “reattach” yourself to that connection. So basically it kind of acts like an IRC proxy. I really like this software, and if you try it I am sure you would like it too.
The other day I was testing out an IRCd software called InspIRCd. I was told about it from a friend of mine, Jared. I am used to compiling and managing UnrealIRCd, which I have talked about in a previous post. It is definitely a lot different then Unreal, but in a good way. It runs great, its stable, and it doesn’t hog up to much CPU or Memory. However, if you are really used to UnrealIRCd, I suggest you stick with it. If your are still kind of new to all of it, try both of them out.
I have been using an IRC client called mIRC for about 9-10 months and it is THE BEST IRC client I have ever used it. It is a stable and simple to use client for Windows. I use it on my Mac too, but I use special software to get that to work. mIRC has a unique scripting language, kind of close to PHP in my opinion. It is not free, but you can use it for free for 20-30 days. The total cost is 20 dollars and well worth the money. I highly suggest you use this software if you are an IRC user and if you want to script a bot, like I do.
There is a new network that is starting to grow little by little that I think everyone should know about. This network is Defcon IRC, which is owned by a friend of mine named Dan, who goes by the IRC alias, GrimReaper or Danneh. I have recently become a Server and Services Admin on this network and I help out with the site and all the servers. Other than that we have some other great staff members like Teressa, Karol, and Duffy. Duffy is our “head programmer”. He pretty much everything to keep everything up. Teressa is the person who rents some server space for our servers, so thanks to her for that. I donated IRC server space on my server, the one this website is on, and its been running great. We have a great time on this network and I can encourage you to join. To see more about this network, you can click here to go to their website.
If you are a Mac user and are looking for a really good IRC client, then Linkinus will solve your problem. Linkinus is an IRC client only for Mac OS X and it costs 20 dollars for the full version. It has a ton of features that you would need to make you feel comfortable on IRC. It has a nice and a kind of complex interface, but you get used to it after a day or so. If you are on the Mac and still using XChat Aqua or something else, switch to Linkinus. I guarantee it will make your IRC experience better.
Since about late May, I have had a self-made bot that I call WiiBot. My bot, which I scripted myself, is a bot that does all kinds of fun things and provides some service to peoples channels on the Wyldryde IRC Network. WiiBot is not as popular right now, but I want to get more ideas for it and advertise it more. A few days ago, I bought the Official WiiBot Website which you can find by going here. If you would like to have WiiBot in your channel, come to #wiibot on irc.wyldryde.org and request it. Also, visit the website for more information.
